Murdoch attempts to get even more power June 15, 2010

Not content with owning The Sun, Times, News of The World along with other countless international media outlets, News Corporation owner Rupert Murdoch has put in a bid to buy out the remaining 60% of BSkyB that is currently owned by another company. For News Corp, this means that it will receive huge amounts of additional revenue stemming from Sky’s on-line television service. For the rest of the country, it will mean that Murdoch will have more of a say when it comes to the content of Sky’s programmes, and we could even see more similarities with the Fox news network. Which is never a good thing.

The deal may be stopped however should the regulators believe that it may give News Corp too much power. In addition, the new Coalition Government are required to approve the deal – not a problem for the Conservatives (who The Sun continuously supported throughout this years election campaign) but the Lib Dems, who were criticised heavily through the election campaign, may use this opportunity to get their revenge. Here’s hoping.

Some fantastic revision material for you here from the UK Film Council which breaks down who’s going to the cinema in terms of age, gender and other factors, and discusses how this has changed over the past ten years.

It’s lengthy but has some excellent material to quote in your exams: Audience demographics

This is a new one. You hear about videos being banned by MTV, or being shown after the watershed only, but you rarely hear about youtube banning videos outright. But after watching MIA’s video for her new single Born Free you may understand why.

The video depicts a group of ginger adolescents being rounded up into an armour-protected van, driven to the country and either shot or made to run through a minefield. Not exactly Universal viewing. A spokesman for youtube said that “the rules prohibit content like pornography or gratuitous violence. If the content breaks our terms then we remove it and if a user repeatedly breaks the rules we disable their account.”

Take a look and think about what kind of messages you think this video is trying to convey and whether youtube was right to make their decision. But BE WARNED: some of the images are rather disturbing.
