Censoring Scotland to make a quick buck? September 15, 2009

Great stuff to think about for your advertising lesson – read this story about a Scottish Tweed company who are dropping all reference to their Scottish heritage for fear that the Yanks might stop buying their products because Scotland released the Lockerbie bomber (click here if you need the background on that one).

Don’t forget that well over a hundred Americans died in the Lockerbie crash, but should this really affect how a company presents itself? Should companies distance themselves from politics in order to increase their sales? Should we boycott all American products simply because they elected George W Bush for their President?

Think about the cultural effects an act such as releasing a terrorist from prison can have on that country’s trade.
