The new face of alcohol advertising?

Nicely timed for your first week at college is the news today that Doctors have called for a ban on advertising alcoholic drinks due to the increase in underage drinking (check out the story here).

As media students, you should realise that although this may be beneficial for the country’s health, it certainly won’t be beneficial for the media industry. Advertising is the reason why Channel 4 and ITV can be broadcast into your home for free, and without it, media companies would lose a huge chunk of money which could lead to job cuts (some of which will be the kind of jobs you will want after your time at college or University).

This is an argument that, as students who are around the legal drinking age, is all about you. Are you such a passive consumer that the only influence on your drinking is what you see in adverts? If the adverts weren’t there, would you be less likely to drink? Thoughts and comments all welcome, and in the meantime, have a quick look at this article from the media guardian’s website.
